Hong Kong universities post record results in Stanford top scientists list

Several major Hong Kong higher education institutions have achieved outstanding results in the newly released 2026 edition of the World's Top 2% Scientists list compiled by Stanford University, with record numbers of scholars recognised for their research impact.

Lingnan University recorded a 25 per cent increase in represented scholars, with 54 academics named compared to 43 previously. More than twenty of these placed within the global top 100 in their respective fields, and six researchers secured the top rank in either mainland China or Hong Kong for their disciplines. University president and data science professor S. Joe Qin retained his leading position in industrial engineering and automation across both China and Hong Kong for career-long impact. Other top performers included public administration specialist Richard M. Walker, who ranked first in political science and public administration, and machine learning expert Xin Yao, who placed first in Hong Kong for artificial intelligence and image processing.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong saw 469 academics make the global database, an increase of nearly forty scholars over the prior year. Fifty-three of its listed scientists ranked in the global top 100 of their fields. The faculty of medicine increased its representation to nearly two hundred scholars on the single-year impact index, including seventeen in the worldwide top 100. Medicine professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming ranked third globally in general clinical medicine, while curriculum instructor Thomas Chiu Kin-fung secured fifth place in education and also placed first among all Hong Kong scholars for overall single-year scientific impact. Geography professor Kwan Mei-po ranked fifth globally in her discipline.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology reported more than two hundred scholars earning spots on the annual and career-long impact leaderboards, representing approximately 40 per cent of its entire tenured and track teaching staff. Year-on-year analysis shows representation on the annual influence list grew by roughly 13 per cent, while career-long impact ranking rose by nearly 20 per cent. Administrative leaders attributed the gains to a strategic focus on talent cultivation and advanced research facilities.

The Education University of Hong Kong achieved a historic milestone with 73 scholars named, an increase of over 30 per cent compared to the previous year. Forty-one of these ranked within the world's top 1 per cent of scientists. While more than half specialise in education, the remaining faculty span 20 other disciplines including linguistics, artificial intelligence, environmental science, forestry, rehabilitation sciences and neurology. The university has recently welcomed 15 distinguished professors from leading European and Asian institutions to support its strategic plan through 2031.
