Hong Kong has established a steering committee to oversee preparations for the 30th anniversary of its return to China next year, the Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Alice Mak, told the Legislative Council on Wednesday.
Speaking in response to a lawmaker's question, Mak said that under the Chief Executive's instruction, the government has set up a steering committee chaired by the Chief Secretary for Administration to provide overall guidance for planning the celebration activities. A dedicated task force, led by the Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration, has also been formed to coordinate the implementation of specific tasks, supported by a project planning office.
The government is now making full efforts to plan and advance the anniversary celebrations and will make announcements in due course, she added.
Mak said various policy bureaux and departments are organising a wide range of activities covering different areas and incorporating elements of national education. The aim is to deepen citizens' understanding of the country's and Hong Kong's history and development, strengthen their sense of national identity and belonging, and cultivate patriotic sentiments.
The celebrations will also showcase Hong Kong's unique advantages of being backed by the motherland and connected to the world under "one country, two systems", highlighting the city's distinctive role and status on the international stage, she said. The events will help tell the stories of China and Hong Kong to the world and promote the opportunities presented by the country's 15th Five-Year Plan.
