Hong Kong revises Hung Hom station development plan, adds green space

Hong Kong's development authority has proposed revised plans for the area around Hung Hom station and the adjacent waterfront, increasing the total gross floor area to about 206,000 square metres, roughly 3 per cent more than an earlier proposal, according to a document submitted to the legislature.

Under the updated plan, residential development accounts for about 62 per cent of the total, up from the previous proposal. Commercial uses including retail, hotel or dormitory space make up 33 per cent, while about 5 per cent is set aside for a yacht club.

The authority said it will no longer build four residential towers on the waterfront. Instead, the site will become public leisure space connected to yacht berthing facilities, responding to public feedback that the prime seafront location should not host dense residential towers. The residential floor area originally planned for that spot will be relocated to another area, where it can be used for a mix of housing, commercial and hotel or dormitory purposes, built atop a public transport interchange.

A landmark building will be constructed on the Hung Hom waterfront. The latest proposal adds two connected towers next to it, rising to 184 metres and 236 metres above principal datum. The connecting space can serve as an open-air leisure area and observation deck with views of Victoria Harbour.

Further technical assessments confirmed the project can provide about 200 yacht berths. The plan also includes beautification work on the Hong Kong Coliseum's exterior and plaza, adding projection facilities and an LED banner to the building's inverted-pyramid facade, and replacing plaza paving and lamp posts.

Regardless of the final implementation model, the authority said it aims to hand over the land to future developers by early 2029.
