Hong Kong reports no radiation abnormalities in Japanese food imports for past 24 hours

Hong Kong's food safety watchdog has found no radiation exceeding safety limits in Japanese imported aquatic products, sea salt and seaweed over the past 24 hours, the government announced on 28 October.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department tested 208 samples of Japanese imported "aquatic products and their products, sea salt and seaweed" for radiation levels between noon on 27 October and noon on 28 October, according to a government press release. All samples passed the safety standards.

During the same period, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) tested 50 local fishery product samples for radiation, with all samples passing inspection. The Hong Kong Observatory has also strengthened monitoring of environmental radiation levels in local waters and has not detected any abnormalities so far, the government said.

Since 24 August 2023, the CFS has tested a total of 271,060 Japanese imported food samples — including 168,715 samples of aquatic products and their products, sea salt and seaweed — while the AFCD has tested 57,710 local fishery product samples. All samples passed radiation level tests, the government noted.

Only Japanese aquatic products, sea salt and seaweed that are not banned from import to Hong Kong are allowed on the market after the CFS confirms their radiation levels are within safe limits, the government said.
