Hong Kong public market stall auctions set for November
Hong Kong's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department will hold public auctions for market stalls from 6-12 November, with three-year leases starting 1 December 2026. Stalls left vacant over six months will be offered at 80 per cent of market rent, and those vacant over eight months at 60 per cent.
Hong Kong's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has announced the November arrangements for leasing public market stalls, with open auctions scheduled for 6 and 9-12 November. The stalls on offer cover cooked food, frozen meat, fresh meat, fresh fish, frozen poultry, fruit, vegetables, dry and wet goods for food and non-food items, handicrafts and services, as well as roast and braised meats. Successful bidders will receive three-year fixed-term leases starting 1 December 2026, with no renewal rights at expiry.
The monthly rent reserve price for each stall will depend on its size, location and vacancy period. For stalls that have been vacant for more than six months, the reserve price will be set at 80 per cent of the market rent; for those vacant for more than eight months, the reserve will be 60 per cent of the market rent, according to FEHD.
The auctions will be held at Room 410, 4th Floor, FEHD Nam Cheong Office and Garage, 87 King Cheong Street West, Kowloon. Admission will be on a first-come-first-served basis until capacity is reached. Registration and ticket distribution will begin 30 minutes before each session. Participants must present their Hong Kong identity card or passport to receive a ticket and a dedicated bidding paddle. FEHD said it has invited representatives from the police and the Independent Commission Against Corruption to monitor the auctions for order and fairness.
Separately, stalls will be available on a first-come-first-served basis from 1 January 2027, with three-year fixed-term leases and no renewal rights. The monthly rent will depend on the stall's size, location, vacancy period and the most recent auction reserve price. The Tung Yat Market will also offer stalls under 24-month fixed-term licences starting 1 January 2027, with no renewal rights, with monthly fees based on stall size.
Individuals interested in renting at the reserve price must attend designated FEHD offices in person on 20 November between 9:30am and 12:30pm or 2:30pm and 4:00pm. Details will be published on the FEHD website after the auctions.
An FEHD spokesman said any person aged 18 or over who ordinarily resides in Hong Kong may bid for or apply to rent a stall. To allow more people to participate and to increase the variety of stalls available, the number of stalls any one lessee may rent in the same market will be limited. Existing lessees cannot bid in the first round of auctions for the same market, but may bid for one stall in the second round or rent one stall on a first-come-first-served basis. Lessees under the current three-year scheme may also bid for or rent a stall in the same market, but must vacate their existing stall before the new lease takes effect.
