Hong Kong's Police Commissioner Monday Ming said on 2 November that authorities have received 138 reports of suspected credit card theft linked to Apple's recent pre-sale of a new foldable smartphone. He believes the cases are connected to the company's decision to disable online commerce security measures during the transaction process, exempting transaction verification.
Speaking at a meeting of the Southern District Council, Monday Ming noted that for another new phone model pre-sold by Apple in September, police had received 1,589 reports of credit card theft. After liaising with Apple, credit card companies and banks, all problematic transfers and purchases have been cancelled, resulting in no financial losses for any victims.
The commissioner stated that police have communicated closely with Apple on multiple occasions. He urged the company to implement effective security measures and strengthen verification when launching new products in the future.
