Hong Kong police arrest two over alleged seditious posts on insurance sales page
Hong Kong police arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of operating a social media page that posted seditious content while selling insurance products, in violation of the National Security Law. Both were released on bail pending further investigation.
Hong Kong police’s National Security Unit arrested a man and a woman on Tuesday in the Kowloon district, alleging they operated a social media page that posted seditious material inciting hatred against the constitutional order of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region while promoting insurance products for profit. The pair, both aged 38, are suspected of violating the offence of seditious intent under the National Security Law for Hong Kong.
Police conducted a court-warranted search of the suspects’ homes and seized evidence. Both were released on bail pending further investigation.
Sources identified the male suspect as Wong Ka-ho, a former member of the district group “North District Activists” and a licensed insurance broker. The female suspect, described as a friend of Wong, is not a licensed insurance practitioner and allegedly assisted in managing the page.
The pair are believed to have run a social media page called “Wong-style Insurance”, which promoted insurance services while repeatedly posting content with seditious intent, aiming to incite hatred against the central government and the SAR government. Police said the offence of “doing a seditious act with seditious intent” carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment upon first conviction.
