Police in Hong Kong arrested the parents of a 10-year-old girl on suspicion of child abuse on 7 October, after she was spotted by a passer-by carrying two large bags of beer in Fu Tai Estate, Tuen Mun.
The Education Bureau said in a statement that it is very concerned about the incident. It confirmed that the school, social workers and police had immediately intervened to follow up on the family's and the student's actual needs and to ensure the child's safety.
In response to media inquiries, the bureau said the school had activated its crisis handling team to provide appropriate assistance for the student's situation. Counselling teachers and social workers had been arranged to offer counselling and support for affected students. The bureau added that it had reminded schools to strengthen communication with parents through home-school cooperation to promote students' healthy development.
A spokesman stressed that the bureau places great importance on protecting children's interests, adding that every child should be protected from harm or abuse. If the investigation identifies areas requiring follow-up, the relevant departments will handle the matter seriously, the spokesman said. The bureau said it will continue to maintain close contact with the school and provide full support.
