Hong Kong police have announced special traffic arrangements for race days at the Happy Valley racecourse, with road closures and diversions set to take effect from noon for day meetings or 6pm for evening meetings.
Under the pre-race measures, the southbound carriageway of Wong Nai Chung Road between Queen's Road East and the uphill slip road outside the Hong Kong Jockey Club will be closed, except for vehicles heading to the Aberdeen Tunnel. The southbound section between Village Road and the uphill slip road outside the Jockey Club will be converted to one-way northbound.
Vehicles travelling east on Queen's Road East towards Wan Chai and Happy Valley must turn left onto Morrison Street. Southbound vehicles on Morrison Street heading to Happy Valley must use Sports Road and Wong Nai Chung Road. All vehicles are prohibited from turning right from Queen's Road East into Wong Nai Chung Road, with an exception for those heading to the Aberdeen Tunnel.
Vehicles coming from the Harbour Tunnel heading to Queen's Road East must use the southbound slip road from Kine's Road Bridge to Morrison Street and then turn right at the junction of Wong Nai Chung Road and Queen's Road East. Vehicles from the Harbour Tunnel bound for Happy Valley or the racecourse must use the southbound slip road from Kine's Road Bridge to Kine's Road East, then southbound Morrison Street, Sports Road and Wong Nai Chung Road.
About 35 minutes before the final race, additional closures will begin. These include the uphill slip road from the Jockey Club to the Aberdeen Tunnel, the southbound section of Wong Nai Chung Road between Queen's Road East and the tunnel slip road, and the southbound section between Village Road and the Jockey Club public stand. The southbound carriageway of Morrison Street between Leighton Road and Queen's Road East will also be closed.
Learner drivers will be banned from turning left from Caroline Road into Leighton Road from 90 minutes before the first race until one hour after the last race. They are also prohibited from using specified roads including Shan Kwai Road between Yee On Street and Wong Nai Chung Road, and Village Road between its junction with Shan Kwai Road.
Parking spaces on the southbound side of Wong Nai Chung Road between Sports Road and Blue Road will be suspended from 11am to 7pm on day race days and from 5pm to 11:59pm on evening race days. Illegally parked vehicles will be towed without prior warning. Police urged motorists to exercise patience and follow officers' instructions.
