Hong Kong orders demolition of three towers in Anderson Road project over steel bar violations

Hong Kong's Buildings Department has approved demolition plans for three towers in the Anderson Road residential development in Kwun Tong, after serious violations were found in steel bar installations across all six blocks, the department confirmed on 8 October 2026.

The department said the project developer intends to demolish and rebuild three of the six towers, and has submitted the relevant demolition drawings, which have been approved. However, no application to commence demolition work has been received so far.

According to the Buildings Department, all six towers in the project were found to have steel bar configurations that seriously deviated from approved plans. The department had required the project's professionals to submit remedial proposals for approval. It earlier accepted the structural engineer's remedial plan for three of the towers, and withdrew the stop-work order in May 2026 to allow remedial works to proceed. Sources said remedial work began gradually from that month.

The department received a report in 2024 alleging that some structural steel bars in the project's superstructure were not installed in accordance with the Buildings Ordinance standards. An investigation published in August 2025 found that all six towers had steel bar configurations seriously deviating from approved plans, including bars installed in wrong positions or displaced, incorrect bar diameters, fewer bars than approved, and structural columns shifted from their designated positions. The department stated at the time that the overall structure of the six towers was not in imminent danger.

In August 2025, the Buildings Department filed 205 charges against the contractor, the authorised signatory and relevant competent technical personnel. The case is scheduled for hearing on 11 June 2027.
