Hong Kong opens first neurology centre at Tuen Mun Hospital
Hong Kong's first neurology centre opened at Tuen Mun Hospital, aiming to improve public healthcare quality and efficiency. The centre offers six core services, including stroke and epilepsy care, in a one-stop format to reduce cross-specialty referrals.
The Neurology Medical Centre at Tuen Mun Hospital officially opened on 23 October, with Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau praising its role in supporting the city's first five-year healthcare plan to enhance public medical service quality and efficiency.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lo noted that as the population ages, neurological cases will inevitably rise. He warned that in the event of a stroke or embolism, 1 to 2 million brain cells die every minute, making time-critical, multidisciplinary coordination essential. He said the Hospital Authority chose Tuen Mun Hospital for the first such centre because of its strong record in diagnostics, internal medicine and surgery.
Hospital Authority Chairman Fong Hung-sang described the centre's launch as a milestone for Tuen Mun Hospital and a new chapter for Hong Kong's public healthcare system. The centre provides six core services: stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, pain management, neurovascular management and support for organ transplants. It offers a comprehensive one-stop service to prevent patients from having to visit multiple specialists.
Fong added that the authority plans to establish similar centres at other major hospitals to further improve neurological care. Hospital Authority Chief Executive LEE Ha-yan, New Territories West Hospital Cluster Chief Executive YANG Yiu-kong and Tuen Mun Hospital Deputy Chief Executive Cheng Chun-bong also attended the ceremony.
