The permanent secretary of the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government praised the unveiling of the Xiamen University Hong Kong Science and Innovation Centre on 3 November 2026, calling it a milestone for cross-border academic and industrial collaboration.
Speaking at the ceremony, the official described the centre as a product of complementary strengths between Hong Kong and mainland China in higher education and scientific research. The centre aims to integrate academic research, talent cultivation and regional industry into a synergistic innovation body, in line with both national and Hong Kong development strategies.
The national 15th Five-Year Plan, the official noted, calls for accelerated high-level technological self-reliance, development of new productive forces and a modern industrial system, while supporting Hong Kong's construction as an international innovation and technology hub. Hong Kong's own First Five-Year Plan includes measures to attract tech talent, promote integrated development of education, science and talent, and build a 'Study in Hong Kong' brand to gather high-level talent from around the world.
The Xiamen University centre, guided by the motto 'Rooted in Hong Kong, integrated into the Greater Bay Area, serving the nation, facing the world', is expected to help attract domestic and international research talent to Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. It will also leverage Hong Kong's unique position as a gateway to connect mainland scientific achievements with the global stage, strengthening cooperation with international universities, research institutes and innovation enterprises.
The official expressed hope that the centre would enhance Hong Kong's role as an international innovation and technology hub and contribute to the nation's broader development objectives. The ceremony marked the formal launch of the centre, which the official described as timely and significant.
