Hong Kong man charged over alleged seditious social media posts
A 52-year-old Hong Kong man has been arrested and charged under the city's national security law for allegedly posting seditious content online. He appeared in court on 7 October.
Hong Kong's National Security Police have arrested and charged a 52-year-old local man under the city's national security legislation, alleging he published seditious material online.
The man was arrested during an operation in the Eastern District on 9 July. He was formally charged on 7 October with one count of knowingly publishing seditious material, contrary to the national security law. He appeared at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court later that day.
Police said their investigation indicated the man had repeatedly posted information on social media platforms with the intention of inciting hatred towards the nation, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government and the judiciary. The posts were also alleged to have encouraged others to seek changes to legally established matters in the region through unlawful means.
The case has been filed under the offence of 'knowingly publishing seditious material' as defined in the national security legislation. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the specific content of the posts or the social media platforms involved.
