CPPCC Standing Committee member Henry Tang mourns former Vice-Premier Liu Yandong, recalling her visits to Hong Kong after SARS and her support for patriotic education. Tang calls Liu a good friend of Hong Kong.
Henry Tang Ying-yen, a Standing Committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Vice-Premier Liu Yandong, praising her as a good friend of Hong Kong.
Tang recalled that Liu visited Hong Kong in 2004 after the city was hit by the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak, offering support and encouraging a quick recovery. At the time, Liu was Vice-Chairperson of the CPPCC and head of the United Front Work Department.
In 2010, Tang led more than 2,500 students and teachers to Beijing, where Liu, then a State Councillor, received them at the Great Hall of the People to show support for Hong Kong's patriotic education. Tang said Liu's affection for Hong Kong was evident.
Tang noted that he and Liu are both from Jiangsu province, and that all Jiangsu natives in Hong Kong will forever remember and cherish Liu's friendship.
