At the opening of the two-day 'Chill Fun WestK Carnival' in West Kowloon, the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism praised the Girl Guides Association's 110-year legacy. The event features 4,000 members, themed zones, and upcoming activities including an international camp in December.

Hong Kong leader hails Girl Guides carnival as 110th anniversary events roll on

The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr. Kevin Yeung, on 18 October 2026 attended the opening ceremony of the two-day "Chill Fun WestK Carnival" organised by the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association, marking the association's 110th anniversary. Speaking at the WestK Art Park, Mr. Yeung noted the venue's combination of natural landscape, harbour views and cultural atmosphere, calling it a fitting "urban oasis" for the event.

The carnival brings together nearly 4,000 Girl Guides and members of youth uniformed groups, along with many public visitors. The grounds are divided into three themed zones: an adventure zone for trying emerging sports, a chill zone featuring stage performances, and an arts zone offering cultural activities. Game booths introduce the distinctive features of various Hong Kong districts, aiming to connect participants with the city.

Mr. Yeung thanked the association's leaders and members for their efforts, praising the girls for their skills in organising activities, running booths and performing. He echoed the association's president, Mrs. Betty Leong, in highlighting the "extraordinary" talents of women in the new era.

The Secretary also outlined upcoming events in the anniversary programme. A summer exchange trip to the Three Gorges was held from July to August, allowing Guides to appreciate the country's natural scenery and cultural heritage. In late December, the association will host the "Spirit of the Universe · Women's Journey" international camp at the Kai Tak Youth Hostel, where participants will explore Hong Kong's nostalgic games, intangible cultural heritage and global issues.

Mr. Yeung said these activities combine education with experience, helping young people understand national development and broaden their international outlook. He said they align with Hong Kong's role as a hub for Chinese and foreign cultural exchange, the national 15th Five-Year Plan's youth development strategy, and the city's first five-year plan goals.

Describing the Girl Guides as Hong Kong's largest female youth uniformed group, Mr. Yeung praised its 110-year record of nurturing responsible leaders. He thanked the association for bringing joy to the community and vitality to the city, and wished the carnival success while encouraging young people to continue serving society.
