Hong Kong leader hails CPC plenum, vows to apply governance lessons
Hong Kong Chief Executive Lee expressed support for the CPC's fifth plenum, pledging to apply its governance and anti-corruption principles to improve Hong Kong's administration and development under the "one country, two systems" framework.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee on 29 October warmly welcomed the conclusion of the fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, describing himself as encouraged and inspired by the outcomes.
The plenum, which took place in the first year of the country's 15th Five-Year Plan, made a major strategic push to strengthen Party discipline and governance, according to a statement from Lee's office. The statement said the plenum's emphasis on self-purification, self-improvement, self-innovation and self-enhancement of the Party would boost its political leadership, ideological guidance, organisational capacity and social appeal.
Lee said the plenum's focus on strict Party governance had direct relevance for Hong Kong's own governance. He noted that since taking office he had built a result-oriented government team and stressed that reform was an ongoing process. The Hong Kong government, he said, must closely integrate the plenum's spirit with the city's realities, continuously improving governance effectiveness and team building, and better responding to public concerns.
The statement added that the Hong Kong government is fully implementing the city's first five-year plan, turning strategic deployments into concrete results for high-quality development. Lee pledged to continue upholding the "one country, two systems" principle, unite all sectors of society, study and implement the plenum's spirit, and leverage the strength and value of "patriots administering Hong Kong".
He said Hong Kong would fulfil its responsibilities, seize opportunities and make its contributions as the country advances its modernisation drive and national rejuvenation.
