Hong Kong launches first commercial electric fishing boat in green push

The Acting Secretary for Environment and Ecology attended the launch ceremony for Hong Kong's first commercial electric fishing boat on 30 October 2026 at Central Pier No 10, alongside a roundtable on green energy and blue economy development.

The vessel, developed by Yuet Lung Fishery Industry Association Limited and the Hong Kong International Marine Innovation and Technology Centre, represents what the acting secretary described as a breakthrough in local innovation and a solid step towards modernising traditional fisheries.

Speaking at the event, the acting secretary noted that the electric fishing boat reduces carbon emissions and noise at sea, improves working conditions for crew, and lowers operating costs, enhancing the industry's long-term competitiveness. He called it a win-win path that balances environmental protection and economic benefits.

The launch aligns with the city's Climate Action Blueprint 2050, which sets a clear carbon neutrality target. The acting secretary said the government is also running an electric ferry pilot programme, with three of four planned electric ferries already in passenger service, operating smoothly and meeting daily range requirements. A fourth electric ferry is being tendered.

He encouraged the fishing industry to apply for support from the Fisheries Sustainable Development Fund to ease the transition, and reaffirmed the government's commitment to accompanying the sector as it adopts greener technologies.

The acting secretary stressed the link between green energy and sustainable fisheries, urging stakeholders to protect the ocean as a shared asset and contribute to the nation's green development goals.
