The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government on Tuesday issued an amber outbound travel alert for France, citing safety concerns stemming from persistent protests and public unrest across the country.
Under the government's alert system, an amber signal indicates signs of threat. A government spokesman noted that demonstrations occurring in multiple locations across France have resulted in violent clashes and property damage.
In response, authorities advised residents already in France or planning to travel there to closely monitor local conditions, exercise heightened caution, prioritise personal safety, keep abreast of local announcements, and steer clear of large gatherings. The administration specifically cautioned against non-essential travel to areas where protests are underway.
The Security Bureau noted that it will continue to closely track the situation across France, with subsequent updates to be distributed through news organisations, the bureau's mobile application, and the official outbound travel alert webpage.
Hong Kong residents abroad requiring emergency support can contact the 24-hour hotline operated by the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit under the Immigration Department at (852) 1868. Assistance can also be sought via network calling or the 1868 chatbot on the department's mobile application, through dedicated WhatsApp and WeChat support lines, by submitting an online assistance request form, or by contacting local Chinese diplomatic missions in France.
Authorities also encouraged residents travelling outside Hong Kong to register their itineraries and contact details through the Immigration Department's Registration of Outbound Travel Information service before departure, ensuring that officials can dispatch emergency guidance and timely updates via text message and other communication channels if needed.
