Hong Kong issues 32 accounts for Guangdong yacht scheme, says minister

Hong Kong's Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mable Chan, has said the 'Guangdong yacht southward' scheme, which launched on 24 October, has seen 32 accounts opened on the Marine Department's electronic business system. Speaking on RTHK's programme 'Saturday Questions', Chan expressed eagerness for more Guangdong yachts to visit Hong Kong, particularly during holidays or near-holiday weekdays, and said authorities are fully prepared.

Chan noted that yachts typically bring families to Hong Kong. On the first day, five Guangdong yachts arrived, including a 'superyacht' nearly 100 feet long. They stayed for three to four days, with some booking hotel accommodation and going ashore for sightseeing and spending. Destinations included Stanley, Central and theme parks. Chan said she believes this will bring a new model for tourism consumption.

The minister also revealed that more than 300 mainland captains have registered for training courses and examinations to familiarise themselves with Hong Kong waters. The Marine Department plans to expand the programme soon, commissioning local training institutions to offer online courses to facilitate participation by overseas captains, with the aim of attracting more foreign yachts to visit Hong Kong.

Regarding ride-hailing licence applications, Chan said the department has received many inquiries and held informal meetings, which she described as encouraging. She expressed hope that experienced platform companies will set up operations in Hong Kong, and that the scheme will attract both private cars and taxis to offer services through the platforms. Licences are expected to be granted in batches from late November to early December.
