Hong Kong's deputy director of immigration, Cheng Wo-muk, who oversees control, visa and documentation matters, visited the Huanggang and Shenzhen Bay checkpoints on the evening of 30 October to observe staff handling passenger and vehicle flows, and to encourage frontline personnel.
The government expects three consecutive nights of peak cross-border traffic starting from the evening of 30 October. At the Huanggang checkpoint, authorities have adopted a public-transport-first principle, coordinating with public transport operators to increase service frequency. The Shenzhen Bay checkpoint has extended its opening hours by two hours, until 2am.
The Immigration Department reported that both the Huanggang and Shenzhen Bay checkpoints saw generally smooth conditions in their passenger departure and arrival halls during late-night hours. It predicted that the late-night period on 31 October and 1 November would be peak departure times at the Huanggang checkpoint.
The department said its staff would remain at their posts and reminded travellers that to save time and pass through customs more quickly, they should try to avoid crossing the border during peak hours.
