Hong Kong funding scheme backs nearly 150 smart production lines
Hong Kong's新型工業化資助計劃 has funded nearly 150 smart production lines, the innovation chief said. The government is boosting youth researcher support and building a national manufacturing innovation centre with pilot lines for third-generation semiconductors.
The Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, said the city's New Industrialisation Funding Scheme has subsidised nearly 150 smart production lines, as the government pushes to accelerate Hong Kong's advanced manufacturing development.
Speaking at an event on Thursday, Sun said innovation commercialisation requires understanding industry needs, managing intellectual property and expanding business outreach. He noted that the government's InnoHK initiative has brought together about 3,000 international researchers from around the world, who collaborate with local institutions to set up research centres and laboratories in Hong Kong.
The government will add a new category for young researchers under the Innovation and Technology Support Programme to strengthen support for early-career scientists, Sun added.
He also said the authorities are helping companies establish advanced manufacturing facilities in Hong Kong. The Microelectronics Research and Development Institute (MRDI) is preparing to set up the city's first national manufacturing innovation centre, with two pilot lines expected to begin operation this year, focusing on third-generation semiconductor research and trial production.
Sun expressed confidence that Hong Kong's advanced public service infrastructure, abundant testing platforms and international connections, combined with the Greater Bay Area's strong manufacturing capabilities and supply chains, would create significant opportunities for businesses.
