Hong Kong fintech week opens; leader cites investor confidence

Hong Kong Fintech Week opened at the Convention and Exhibition Centre on 2 November, with Chief Executive John Lee addressing attendees. He said the event had drawn about 1,000 government leaders, fintech, finance and technology professionals from more than 100 countries and territories, including approximately 800 exhibitors and start-ups, as well as more than 30 delegations from mainland China and overseas.

Lee noted that Hong Kong continues to be rated the world's freest economy and has climbed to second place in global competitiveness rankings. He said this reflected market confidence in the city, including investors continuing to place their capital in Hong Kong, talent viewing the city as a place to realise their future development, and international companies choosing to establish and expand their businesses there.

The Chief Executive added that the Northern Territories would provide more development opportunities. He said the area was building an innovation industry chain that would connect talent with research, commercialisation and industrialisation, ultimately linking with capital and the global market. Although the global economy faced widespread uncertainty, Lee expressed his firm belief that Hong Kong's future would be a shared future for business, finance and technology.
