Hong Kong financial tech group holds sixth meeting, keeps global top ranking

Hong Kong's Financial Technology Project Executive Steering Group held its sixth meeting on 26 October 2026, chaired by Secretary for Financial Services and Treasury Christopher Hui. Hui stated that the government places high importance on promoting financial technology development, noting that Hong Kong maintained its global top ranking in financial technology in the latest Global Financial Centres Index report released last month, underscoring the city's position as a global financial technology hub.

The meeting included exchanges of views on various financial technology areas, including the proposed regulatory regime for virtual asset trading, custody, advisory and management services. Financial regulators also reported on the latest progress in applying artificial intelligence in financial markets.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) briefed the group on the latest developments of the Ensemble project, Hong Kong's banking sector quantum readiness, the Commercial Data Interoperability platform and the CargoX project. The steering group was also informed that Hong Kong FinTech Week 2026, themed 'Fintech Hub – Connecting the World, Building the Future', will be held from 2 to 6 November in conjunction with the StartmeupHK创业节 (StartmeupHK Entrepreneurship Festival). The main forum will take place on 2 and 3 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Now in its 11th year, the annual global flagship event will continue to gather participants from around the world. The Financial Services and Treasury Bureau and InvestHK, together with participating units and the industry, will showcase the vitality of Hong Kong's fintech ecosystem to the global market.

The steering group, chaired by the Secretary for Financial Services and Treasury, includes representatives from the HKMA, the Securities and Futures Commission, the Insurance Authority, the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council, InvestHK, the Hong Kong Cyberport and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. Hui said the group's work helps promote cross-sector coordination and cooperation, and the government will continue to take multi-pronged measures to promote fintech development, including improving financial infrastructure, enriching the fintech ecosystem, nurturing fintech talent, and strengthening connections and cooperation with other places.
