Hong Kong financial sector sees rise in female senior leadership, says finance chief
Hong Kong's finance chief Paul Chan said financial institutions in the city have seen the proportion of women in senior leadership roles rise to 45 per cent in 2026 from 34 per cent in 2018, citing a study. He spoke at a summit on women executives.
Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said on Monday that two principles are crucial for finance to support economic growth in a rapidly changing world: embracing talent and managing capital with a long-term perspective.
Speaking at the Women Executives Summit, Chan said institutions that welcome talent from all backgrounds are better able to navigate change, make sound decisions and seize opportunities. He cited a study showing that the proportion of women holding senior leadership roles in Hong Kong's financial institutions had reached 45 per cent, up from 34 per cent in 2018. Chan attributed the increase to individual effort, family support and workplace opportunities.
Chan also highlighted Hong Kong's common-law system, free capital flows and deep pool of professional expertise as providing a reliable foundation for investors seeking to commit capital over the long term. He said the city's connections with mainland China and the rest of the world bring together talent, ideas and investment opportunities, making Hong Kong a place where international institutions can build diverse teams and serve clients across markets.
