Hong Kong customs officers have arrested two mainland Chinese women on suspicion of drug trafficking after seizing about 3.5 kg of suspected cannabis flower from their hand luggage at the airport. The pair, aged 50 and 54, arrived on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, on 6 November.
Customs officers conducting clearance inspections discovered the suspected drugs in the women's hand luggage. Both were immediately taken into custody. The two cases remain under investigation, according to a government press release.
Under Hong Kong's Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious offence. Those convicted face a maximum fine of HK$5 million and life imprisonment.
Customs said it would continue to use intelligence analysis and risk-management principles to step up efforts against drug trafficking, focusing on passengers from high-risk areas. The department urged the public to remain vigilant and not to participate in drug trafficking for financial gain. It also warned people not to accept any offer to carry or deliver controlled items into or out of Hong Kong, and not to help transport items without first verifying their nature.
Members of the public can report suspected drug trafficking activities via the Customs 24-hour hotline 182 8080, the dedicated email account [email protected], or the online form at eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002.
