Hong Kong customs officers seized about HK$1.3 million worth of suspected cocaine at the airport on October 25, arresting a 39-year-old mainland Chinese male traveller. The man had arrived from Penang, Malaysia, and was intercepted during a customs check of his carry-on luggage.
The arrested individual has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. The case is scheduled to be heard at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court on October 26.
Customs officials said they would continue to use intelligence analysis to strengthen efforts against drug trafficking. They urged the public to remain vigilant, warning against participating in drug trafficking for financial gain. The department advised people not to accept offers to transport controlled items into or out of Hong Kong, nor to assist others in moving goods without confirming their nature.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious offence. Upon conviction, offenders face a maximum fine of HK$5 million and life imprisonment.
Customs said it would continue applying risk-management principles, focusing checks on passengers from high-risk areas to effectively combat cross-border drug trafficking.
