Hong Kong customs arrested two mainland Chinese men at the airport on 23-24 October, seizing about 5kg of suspected cannabis and 5.4kg of suspected cocaine from their checked luggage. Both were charged with drug trafficking and will appear in court on 26 October.
Hong Kong customs have busted two drug trafficking cases at the airport within two days, arresting two mainland Chinese men and seizing a total of about 10.4kg of suspected narcotics.
In the first case, a 37-year-old mainland Chinese male traveller was arrested on 23 October after arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, via Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Customs officers found about 5kg of suspected cannabis in his checked luggage during clearance.
In the second case, a 46-year-old mainland Chinese man was arrested on 24 October after arriving from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via Zurich, Switzerland. Customs officers discovered about 5.4kg of suspected cocaine in his checked luggage.
Both men have been charged with one count each of trafficking in a dangerous drug. The two cases will be heard at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on 26 October.
Customs said it will continue to use intelligence analysis to strengthen its crackdown on drug trafficking activities. It urged the public to remain vigilant, not to participate in drug trafficking for financial gain, not to accept any offers or commissions to transport controlled items into or out of Hong Kong, and not to help others carry items without first confirming their nature.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious offence. Upon conviction, offenders face a maximum fine of HK$5 million and life imprisonment.
Members of the public can report suspected drug trafficking activities via the Customs 24-hour hotline at 182 8080, the dedicated crime reporting email account at [email protected], or the online form at eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002.
