Hong Kong businesses can help rural industries reach global markets: senior adviser
National 15th Five-Year Plan targets rural revitalisation. Hong Kong business leaders say city can help develop rural industries and export to overseas markets.
A senior Hong Kong adviser says the city's business community can play multiple roles in helping China's rural industries reach overseas markets, as Beijing's 15th Five-Year Plan pushes for rural revitalisation.
The national plan, covering the period from 2026 to 2030, calls for promoting rural revitalisation, fostering distinctive rural industries, leisure tourism and other new sectors, and advancing common prosperity for all citizens.
David Chiu, a standing committee member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and president of the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, said rural revitalisation offers huge business opportunities. Hong Kong businessmen can play diverse roles in helping rural industries expand into overseas markets, he said.
In Yunnan province, known for its coffee beans, coffee estates combining culture and tourism have developed, boosting farmers' incomes. Hong Kong businessmen have also helped connect Yunnan coffee producers with international buyers.
Chiu made the remarks in an interview with RTHK, Hong Kong's public broadcaster, on 7 October.
