Hong Kong appoints new Vice-Chancellor of Metropolitan University
Hong Kong's Education Secretary appoints a new Vice-Chancellor of Metropolitan University. The appointee, a respected public servant, has served on the university's council for years. The outgoing Vice-Chancellor is thanked for over two decades of service.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has appointed a new Vice-Chancellor of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). The appointment was announced by the Education Bureau on 9 October 2026.
Education Secretary Dr. Choi, Yuen-lin welcomed the appointment, describing the appointee as a highly respected public figure who has dedicated himself to public service. Dr. Choi noted that the new Vice-Chancellor first joined HKMU's council in 2008, served as treasurer from 2009 to 2014, as vice-chairman from 2014 to 2016, and as chairman from 2016 to 2022. She said he demonstrated outstanding leadership in helping transform HKMU into a comprehensive university, and expressed confidence that his experience would provide valuable insights for the university's long-term development.
Dr. Choi also thanked the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Fong Ching, who has served the university for more than 20 years. Dr. Fong first joined the council in 2003, served as chairman from 2009 to 2016, and was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 2023. Dr. Choi noted that the university's major achievements over the years were due to Dr. Fong's contributions.
Under the Hong Kong Metropolitan University Ordinance, the Chancellor may appoint a Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the Council. After authorisation by the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor may exercise the Chancellor's powers and duties, including conferring degrees and other academic titles in the name of the university.
