Hong Kong Science Museum showcases 2026 Future Science Prize laureates' work

The Hong Kong Science Museum has launched the "2026 Future Science Prize Exhibition", showcasing the research achievements of this year's laureates. The Future Science Prize, established in 2016, presents three annual awards to scientists from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan for outstanding scientific accomplishments, aiming to inspire China, the world and future generations through scientific spirit.

This year's Life Science Prize goes to Dr Zhang Hong for his pioneering contributions in revealing the autophagy mechanisms unique to multicellular organisms and their physiological functions. The Material Science Prize is awarded to Professor Zhao Dongyuan for his groundbreaking work on mesoporous materials, including controlled synthesis, mechanistic understanding and industrial applications. Professor Yuan Xinyi receives the Mathematics and Computer Science Prize for his foundational contributions to arithmetic geometry.

The exhibition features multiple multimedia and interactive installations that explain in accessible terms the science behind previous prize-winning projects, including cryptography, catalysis and hepatitis viruses. The "Digital Fingerprint Laboratory" lets visitors experience the anti-counterfeiting power of cryptography, exploring the research field of Professor Wang Xiaoyun, winner of the 2019 Mathematics and Computer Science Prize. An interactive exhibit on the mechanism of hepatitis B virus infection of liver cells presents the breakthrough research of Professor Li Wenhui, the 2022 Life Science Prize winner, who discovered how specific receptors on human liver cells are exploited by hepatitis B and D viruses. Through the "Catalysis Reaction Simulator", visitors can learn about the single-atom catalysis research of Professor Zhang Tao and Professor Li Yadong, winners of the 2024 Material Science Prize, and how this approach improves industrial efficiency.

During the exhibition period, the "2026 Future Science Prize Week" will be held, with its highlight event, the "Science Summit", taking place on 6 and 7 November at the museum's lecture hall. World-renowned scientists will share cutting-edge research findings. Details are available at hk.science.museum/tc/web/scm/exhibition/fsp.html.
