Legislative Council president Starry Lee told the opening ceremony of the Global University Presidents and Leaders Summit that a planned university city in the northern district would become an important platform for attracting global talent and driving industry-academia-research collaboration.
Lee said talent was key to enhancing Hong Kong's status as an international financial, shipping and trade centre and to developing it into an international innovation and technology hub, adding that higher education was the starting point for talent cultivation.
She noted that Hong Kong was home to many world-class universities with internationally recognised research capabilities. However, she said turning research into tangible results required government policy support, active participation from industry and joint efforts from all parties. She expressed hope that the summit would help deepen the integration of industry, academia and research.
