Hong Kong Fire Services tightens security ahead of APEC finance meeting

The Hong Kong Fire Services Department has announced comprehensive security deployments ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) finance ministers' meeting, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday next week in Hong Kong.

In a social media post, the department said it has fully implemented special security arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the meeting. Measures include stepped-up routine safety inspections and checks to identify and eliminate potential risks, with the aim of maintaining social safety and stability.

The department has recently conducted a wide range of targeted inspections and enforcement operations. These include checks on venues related to the meeting, inspections of MTR stations, construction sites and typhoon shelters, as well as visits to hardware stores and chemical raw material suppliers.

Officers have also cracked down on illegal fuel transfer points, set up joint roadblocks with police to inspect vehicles transporting dangerous goods, and inspected fire services installations and equipment at buildings with bamboo scaffolding and netting. Fire prevention inspections have also been carried out at older buildings.

Separately, the Fire Services Department noted that the Chung Yeung Festival is approaching. It has rolled out various contingency measures including enhanced hillfire patrols, the use of advanced technology to monitor conditions in hillside areas, and public fire prevention publicity campaigns to raise awareness and prevent hill fires.
