Hong Kong Customs officers intercepted a 44-year-old mainland Chinese female passenger at Hong Kong International Airport on 6 November after she arrived from Tokyo, Japan. Officers found about 26,800 untaxed cigarettes in her personal luggage, with an estimated market value of about HK$134,000 and unpaid duty of about HK$88,600. The passenger was arrested at the scene.
Customs welcomed the court's sentencing, saying the prison term serves as a strong deterrent and reflects the seriousness of the offence. Under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance, cigarettes are dutiable goods, and anyone who handles, possesses, sells or purchases smuggled cigarettes commits an offence. Upon conviction, offenders face a maximum fine of HK$2 million and up to seven years in prison.
Customs reminded the public that smuggling untaxed cigarettes is a serious crime. Members of the public can report suspected smuggling activities by calling the Customs 24-hour hotline at 182 8080, emailing [email protected], or using the online form at eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002.
