The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is building the city's third medical school and has recruited Liang Ruhong, a local clinical medical scientist from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) medical faculty, to serve as senior vice-dean of the HKUST medical school and acting director of its clinical medicine department.
HKUST President Ye Yuru said that outstanding scholars and scientific researchers from around the world will gradually join the university, and that the recruitment process has been very smooth. She expressed encouragement over the rigorous selection mechanism and process used to identify candidates, noting that several key positions have already found suitable appointees.
Ye added that many internationally renowned and highly experienced scientific researchers share HKUST's vision and philosophy, reflecting the medical school's global market appeal and international academic and medical confidence in Hong Kong's medical innovation development prospects.
Asked whether HKUST's medical school was poaching from the city's two existing medical schools, Ye said that HKUST's vision and initial intention in developing the new medical school is to cooperate with the other two medical schools to elevate Hong Kong's medical development to a higher level, and that HKUST will not actively poach.
Li Jingcun, founding dean of the HKUST medical school, said the university evaluates local and overseas applicants in a fair and just manner, considering applicants' qualifications to select the most suitable talent.
Senior Vice-Dean Liang Ruhong said he identifies with HKUST's vision for establishing a medical school, calling participation in the founding process a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and expressed a desire to contribute using his experience serving at other institutions.
