HK commerce chief opens Asian Auto Twist Championship, cites tourism boost

Commerce and Economic Development Bureau Secretary Edward Chan on 17 October 2026 opened the 2026 Asian Auto Twist Championship – Hong Kong leg at the Wan Chai waterfront, praising the event as a boost to the city's tourism and economy.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chan thanked the Hong Kong China Automobile Association and supporting partners for bringing the Asian motorsport event to Hong Kong for the first time.

“Mega events are an important driver for Hong Kong's tourism and economic development,” Chan said. “The SAR government has been actively promoting the mega-event economy by organising diversified events, including cultural and arts programmes, sports competitions and international conferences and exhibitions, to attract more tourists to Hong Kong, boost consumption and create business opportunities for related industries such as tourism, catering, retail and hotels.”

Chan noted Hong Kong's unique advantages in hosting international events, backed by its connection to mainland China and the world. He said the championship, featuring racers from different regions, adds diversity to the city's event calendar, with the Wan Chai waterfront venue enhanced by the Victoria Harbour backdrop.

The event tests technical skill, concentration and precise control, providing a platform for racers to exchange experience and deepening public understanding of auto twist, Chan added. He also said the government has been working with various organisations and stakeholders to support different types of events in Hong Kong, including a new exhibition on superyachts and high-end lifestyle, The Festival of Connoisseurs, scheduled to open next month with government funding and facilitation.

Chan wished the championship success and urged spectators and tourists to enjoy the race, local cuisine and shopping, experiencing Hong Kong's urban charm.
