Greater Bay Area Youth Orchestra ends three-city tour for biggest season yet

The Greater Bay Area Youth Orchestra has completed its fourth concert season with a three-city tour across Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, bringing together more than 100 young instrumentalists from the region to mark National Day. The 2026 tour ran from October 9 to 11, organised by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with the Swire Group as founding patron.

The initiative also received support from the Hong Kong government's Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, the Shenzhen Municipal Culture, Media, Tourism and Sports Bureau, and the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. This year's roster was the largest in the ensemble's history, with 103 musicians drawn from various Greater Bay Area cities.

Before the public performances, the cohort attended an intensive orchestral training camp at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts campus from October 2 to 9. During the week-long residency, participants worked with 13 mentors from leading music conservatories and professional orchestras worldwide. The coaching focused on technical precision, musical interpretation and the practical standards required in professional ensembles.

Since its launch in 2022, the programme has trained and provided performance exposure to more than 400 young musicians, staged 14 concerts and reached an aggregate audience exceeding 8,000 concertgoers. John Swire and Sons, the founding patron, said convening emerging musicians from varied backgrounds offers fertile ground for artistic growth, teamwork and cross-boundary cultural understanding.

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts said the project reflects its mission to cultivate performing talent across Asia. Academy representatives added that professional mentorship, rigorous rehearsal and stage exposure help students expand their artistic capabilities collaboratively, and that continued cooperation with mainland Chinese governmental and academic partners is vital to the programme's long-term vitality.

This season featured Hong Kong-born conductor Ken Lam as guest conductor. Lam, who serves as director of orchestral studies and resident conductor of the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra, resident conductor of the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina and artistic director of Hong Kong Voices, said returning to work with regional students and international coaches offered a valuable chance to foster regional artistic collaboration.

The concert programme bridged Eastern and Western traditions, including Hector Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture, selected movements from Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet suites, Chen Yi's Duo Ye No. 2 and the 1919 edition of Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.
