Frozen shrimp sample found with nitrofuran metabolites in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) announced on 5 October 2026 that a sample of prepackaged frozen shrimp tested positive for nitrofuran metabolites, substances banned in food production due to health risks.

The affected product is "Peeled White Shrimp" (deveined), weighing 200 grams, with a best-before date of 22 January 2028. It was sourced from China and distributed by Long Shun Global Seafood Trading Company.

The CFS detected nitrofuran metabolites at 6.1 parts per billion in the sample, which was collected from a fresh food shop in North Point under the centre's routine food surveillance programme.

A CFS spokesman said the centre has informed the retailer of the violation and ordered the removal and suspension of sales of the affected batch. The distributor has initiated a recall of the batch as instructed.

Members of the public can contact the distributor's hotline at 2573 7433 during office hours for recall-related inquiries.

The CFS said it will notify the trade, continue its investigation and take appropriate follow-up action. The probe remains ongoing.
