First trial of new Huanggang border crossing: 5-minute clearance from Hong Kong to Shenzhen
Hong Kong's RTHK tested the new Huanggang Port automated clearance system on 12 October 2026, completing immigration procedures in about one minute and overall crossing in approximately 5 minutes. The bus journey from Kwun Tong to the port took about 40 minutes.
The new Huanggang Port officially opened on the morning of 12 October 2026, with many residents and travellers trying out the new crossing facilities, according to Hong Kong's RTHK.
RTHK conducted a first-hand test by taking the first cross-border tourist bus on the Huanggang route. The bus departed Kwun Tong at 6am, passing through Diamond Hill and Tai O Tau Tunnel, arriving at the Huanggang Port Joint Inspection Building at about 6:40am. After taking an escalator to the departure hall, the reporter used the 'three-gate' automated channel for immigration procedures, completing the entire crossing in about one hour.
The reporter, using the channel for the first time, first passed through a gate using a home return permit to verify eligibility. The second gate conducted exit checks, collecting facial and fingerprint data. The final gate performed entry checks. The entire immigration process took about one minute. After passing through mainland China customs, the reporter officially arrived at the Shenzhen port area, with the overall clearance process taking about five minutes.
The reporter also tested the government public wireless network service available in the Hong Kong port area, reporting that the process was smooth.
