Consumer council finds leakage in two nappy samples out of 25 tested
Hong Kong's consumer council tested 25 nappy and training pants samples. All met hygiene and chemical safety standards, but two leaked and one exceeded absorbency limits. Prices ranged from HK$1.50 to HK$7.60 per piece.
Hong Kong's Consumer Council tested 25 samples of disposable nappies, training pants and night-time nappies for infants and toddlers on the market. All samples met hygiene requirements and complied with mainland Chinese chemical safety standards, but the council found significant differences in functional performance. Two samples exhibited side leakage, and one sample had a rewet amount exceeding the standard limit.
The 25 samples tested had average prices ranging from HK$1.50 to HK$7.60 per piece. The council evaluated them against relevant mainland Chinese standards, assessing hygiene, quality performance, chemical safety, pH value, absorption performance and leak-proof performance.
Regarding leak-proof and absorption performance, some samples absorbed liquid relatively slowly and showed poor continuous absorption efficiency. Two samples leaked during inclined testing, failing to meet standard requirements. One of those samples had an average rewet amount of 22.5 grammes, exceeding the standard limit of 15 grammes.
The council noted that the agent for the two products said they would be discontinued and replaced by a new series.
The council pointed out that the test results showed that both higher-priced and lower-priced products included samples that performed well. It reminded parents not to base their purchasing decisions solely on price.
