Chinese electric-vehicle and battery maker BYD has established a wholly owned subsidiary in Hong Kong, BYD Smart Transit (Hong Kong) Limited, based at the Hong Kong Science Park in Tai Po's Pak Shek Kok area. Ren Lin has been appointed director and Li Liangliang general manager, as the company responds to the Hong Kong government's push for smart, green collective transport systems.

The new subsidiary plans to introduce BYD's SkyShuttle rail transit system to Hong Kong, offering what it describes as more convenient, low-carbon and intelligent travel options. BYD said it is actively participating in local transport infrastructure development, including bidding for the Kai Tak smart green collective transport system, whose tender closes in August.

BYD also views Hong Kong as a platform to expand its rail transit business overseas, leveraging the city's role as a gateway between mainland China and international markets to advance global project cooperation and market development. The company stressed it possesses full independent research, development and testing capabilities across the new-energy industrial chain and can provide turnkey rail transit solutions.

The company said the SkyShuttle design reduces operational noise and environmental impact along routes, can adapt to Hong Kong's hilly and steep terrain, and includes wind-resistance features. It said the system could offer an alternative for the city's complex transport environments and connectivity needs, complementing Hong Kong's high-density development and its existing rail, bus and pedestrian networks.

BYD noted that SkyShuttle technology is already in service in several mainland Chinese cities including Chongqing, Hunan, Shaanxi and Shandong. In overseas markets, the company has participated in building Line 17 of the Sao Paulo rail transit system in Brazil, which began full operations at the end of last month, covering trains, platform screen doors, power supply systems and operations control centres.
