Anita Mui's ashes missing since July, police major crime unit investigating

Anita Mui International Fan Club on Wednesday posted a notice on social media, attributed to “Anita Mui’s family”, saying that the late singer’s ashes have been missing since July. The notice was shared on what would have been Mui’s 63rd birthday.

According to the fan club, fans visiting the Hoi To Pagoda at Po Lin Monastery in Tai O, Lantau Island, on 18 July discovered that the screws on the doorplate marking the location of Mui’s ashes were loose, and the urn was not there. The family immediately reported the matter to police, but the ashes have not yet been recovered. The fan club called on the public to provide any information.

When asked for comment, police confirmed that a report was received on 18 July about items suspected to be missing from a temple in the Ngong Ping area of Lantau. After investigation, the case was classified as a request for police assistance and was transferred to the Lantau Island District Major Crime Unit for follow-up. No arrests have been made so far.

Police said they will continue to maintain contact with the person who reported the case and other relevant parties, and will take appropriate follow-up action.
