Macau allocates 15.9 billion patacas to pension fund to secure civil service retirement
Macau's government will transfer about 15.9 billion patacas from last year's budget surplus to the retirement fund, covering an expected 8.986 billion patacas shortfall over five years. The move aims to ensure the stability of the civil service pension and survivors' benefits system.
Macau's government will allocate about 15.9 billion patacas from last year's budget execution surplus to the retirement fund, covering an expected funding gap of about 8.986 billion patacas over the next five years for civil service retirement and survivors' benefits, according to an official notice published on Monday.
The government gazette published an executive order by Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai, who, following legal requirements and after consulting the财政局 (Financial Services Bureau), decided to transfer 80 per cent of the 2025 central budget execution surplus, nearly 20 billion patacas, as budget revenue for the retirement fund in the next fiscal year.
The government reiterated that the allocation ratio will not affect spending on people's livelihoods or social welfare, nor will it impact the statutory allocation to the basic reserve or the accumulated fiscal reserves over the years.
According to government data, 6,320 active civil servants are currently entitled to the retirement and survivors' benefits scheme, while 6,711 pension and survivors' benefit payments are being made on a regular basis.
The allocation is intended not only to address the projected shortfall but also to provide forward-looking planning and configuration, ensuring the system operates steadily in the future, the government said.
