The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo has been promoting the city's innovation and technology development under its first five-year plan to Korean businesses, with officials highlighting Hong Kong's unique advantages as a gateway to mainland China and global markets.

At a luncheon event, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's Chief Representative for the Tokyo Economic and Trade Office, Lam Yuk-ting, told attendees that Hong Kong serves as an ideal platform for Korean companies seeking to develop and expand their innovation and technology businesses, as well as to access the Chinese mainland and international markets.

Lam said the city's first five-year plan for economic and social development (2026-2030) identifies innovation and technology advancement as one of the highest strategic priorities for future economic growth. The plan sets out a clear strategic roadmap to accelerate Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology centre, including the development of three major innovation parks and five key research institutions.

The chief representative added that the Hong Kong SAR government will invest significant resources to advance innovation and technology, including establishing a HK$10 billion innovation and technology industry guidance fund to support the commercialisation and industrialisation of research outcomes. Together with market funding, the fund is expected to leverage at least HK$40 billion in total investment.

Korean business representatives who participated in a three-day study tour in Hong Kong from late August to early September also shared their experiences visiting the city's major innovation and technology hubs and strategic infrastructure. The Tokyo office encouraged attendees who had not yet visited Hong Kong to experience first-hand the city's latest developments as an international innovation, technology and business hub.

The Tokyo office said it will continue to work closely with regional partners, including Invest Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, to foster innovation and technology partnerships and strengthen ties between Korea and Hong Kong.
