Democrats sweep US midterms in 'blue tsunami' rebuke to Trump

Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the 3 November midterm elections, a rare feat that opinion polls did not predict. The landslide victory is seen as a rebuke of President Donald Trump and his policies, including the Iran war, trade tariffs and healthcare cuts.

Democrats sweep US midterms in 'blue tsunami' rebuke to Trump

Democrats stunned President Donald Trump’s Republican Party by winning in a landslide to take control of both Houses of Congress in the 3 November midterm elections, according to a report by Michael Chugani in The Standard. The victory, described as a “blue tsunami”, swept across Republican-leaning red states, including deep red Texas, where Democrats ousted the longtime Republican governor and defeated a Republican Senate candidate.

Opinion polls leading up to the election had shown Democrats would almost certainly win the House of Representatives and had a chance to win the Senate, but none predicted the scale of the victory. It is extremely rare for a political party to win both Houses of Congress in midterm elections.

The outcome was a humiliating slap in the face for Trump, the report said. Democrat candidates tied his unpopular policies – including the Iran war, trade tariffs and healthcare cuts – to their Republican opponents. Wealthy donors, Republican lobby groups and tech tycoons led by Elon Musk pumped billions into Republican campaigns, but angry voters showed they would not allow billionaires to buy elections.

Democrats will formally take control of Congress in early January. They have made clear they will hold multiple Congressional hearings into alleged corruption by the president and his family, and will grill his top aides. Trump had used many manoeuvres to prevent a Democratic midterm victory, but courts dismissed them as illegal. Democrats had feared he would interfere with the elections or claim fraud, as he did when he lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden.

Trump told several media outlets he will accept the election outcome and work with Democrats in his two remaining years as president. He is now a lame duck president but warned he will veto laws the Democrats pass that he does not like.
