Xi tells Swiss president nations should make open cooperation a reality

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 30 October, urging both nations to champion openness and strengthen cooperation ties.

Xi said China was willing to work with Switzerland to uphold the banner of openness, tighten the bonds of cooperation and promote inclusive economic globalisation. He said the two sides should together inject valuable confidence and more certainty into China-Europe economic and trade ties and global economic development.

“Both sides must insist on mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, turning the blueprint of open cooperation into a visible and tangible reality,” Xi was quoted as saying by state news agency Xinhua. He expressed hope that Switzerland would play an active role in promoting the steady development of China-Europe trade.

According to Xinhua, Keller-Sutter said Switzerland looked forward to strengthening dialogue and exchanges with China, insisting on mutually beneficial cooperation and pushing for greater development in all areas of bilateral ties. She said Bern was willing to coordinate closely, uphold multilateralism and defend free trade in order to contribute to world development, prosperity, peace and stability.

The meeting comes as the European Union considers imposing tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, a move that has strained trade relations between Beijing and Brussels. Switzerland is not an EU member but maintains close economic ties with the bloc.
