Rescue operations for the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Baqên County in Nyingchi, Tibet, have entered the golden rescue period, with multiple agencies carrying out search, rescue and resettlement work in an orderly manner, according to state media.
CCTV News reported that at the No. 2 Village resettlement centre in Mayu Township, the worst-affected area, more than 50 blue tents have been set up to accommodate survivors, and all villagers have moved in. Before dark the previous day, many residents were seen carrying blankets and various daily necessities into the tents, which were lit from within.
The local power company said most of the tents had already been connected to domestic electricity, and the remainder would be connected gradually.
On the communications front, the first teams from China Mobile arrived at the scene and restored some of the damaged base stations. The original base stations could provide service for up to 750 users, but after deploying emergency communications vehicle base stations, the total capacity has been increased to serve an additional 2,400 users simultaneously. Communications capacity in the quake zone has now been restored to pre-earthquake levels.
