Macau-born giant panda twins ‘Jianjian’ and ‘Kangkang’ fly to Chengdu for next stage of learning journey

Giant panda twins Jianjian and Kangkang, born in Macau a decade ago, departed for Chengdu, Sichuan on a charter flight on Sunday 8 November to begin the next stage of their learning and growth journey. The Municipal Affairs Bureau held a departure ceremony for them.

The charter plane took off from Macau International Airport at noon. A team from the bureau’s animal care and medical unit, along with giant panda specialists from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, accompanied the twins on the flight. The team prepared bamboo and biscuits as in-flight meals for Jianjian and Kangkang. Upon arrival in Chengdu, they were taken by dedicated vehicle to the base for quarantine.

Jianjian and Kangkang, born on 26 June 2016, are the first pair of giant panda twins born in Macau. To ensure a smooth journey, the two pandas had already undergone a month-long quarantine in Macau, and experts from both sides confirmed they were in good health.
