Guangzhou Customs seizes 1.4kg of heroin hidden in sandal soles at Baiyun Airport

Guangzhou Customs has seized about 1.4 kilogrammes of heroin hidden in the soles of platform women's sandals in a transnational parcel smuggling case at Baiyun Airport.

Customs officers were inspecting a transfer parcel declared as 'shoulder bags' when they noticed abnormal X-ray images. Opening the box, they found seven shoe boxes containing seven pairs of thick-soled women's sandals. The heels were unusually thick at 7cm and the shoes were much heavier than normal.

Officers dismantled the soles and found multiple packages of white powder wrapped in foil and clear tape hidden in sealed compartments. Tests confirmed the powder was heroin, weighing 1,393.5 grammes.

The drugs and evidence have been handed to anti-smuggling authorities for further investigation. Customs reminded the public that smuggling, selling, transporting or manufacturing drugs are serious criminal offences in the mainland, with the most serious cases punishable by death.
