Former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Politburo member and deputy head of the Central Rural Work Leading Group Ma Xingrui has been indicted on bribery charges, state broadcaster CCTV reported on 5 November. He is set to stand trial at the Yichang Intermediate People's Court in Hubei province.
According to the report, the case was concluded by the National Supervision Commission before being referred to the prosecuting authorities for review. The Supreme People's Procuratorate ordered Ma's arrest on suspicion of bribery and designated the Yichang People's Procuratorate to handle the case. The Yichang People's Procuratorate has since filed charges with the Yichang Intermediate People's Court.
Ma is accused of using his official positions to seek benefits for others and illegally accepting a huge amount of property. The charges specifically cite his roles as a member and deputy general manager of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation's party group, later becoming its party secretary and general manager; deputy party secretary of Guangdong province and party secretary of Shenzhen; deputy party secretary and governor of Guangdong; and a member of the CCP Central Committee's Politburo.
The indictment alleges that Ma exploited the便利 conditions arising from his positions and authority to accept bribes on a particularly large scale. The Supreme People's Procuratorate stated that he should be held criminally liable for bribery according to law.
