China's top trade fair opens in Shanghai amid push for high-level openness

The ninth China International Import Expo (CIIE) opened in Shanghai on 5 November, with Chinese Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang delivering a keynote speech. Ding, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, said the expo demonstrates China's firm support for trade liberalisation and economic globalisation, and represents a major move to voluntarily open its markets to the world.

According to Ding, the CIIE has evolved from a Chinese initiative into a shared commitment among all parties, and from a unilateral opening-up measure into a global choice. He said the event has been improving year by year and is showing strong vitality.

The vice-premier said the expo bears witness to China's determination and practical actions to promote high-level opening up. It also shows the significant results and major gains that companies and people from various countries have achieved by sharing in China's market economy, he said.

Ding added that the CIIE demonstrates the relentless efforts and important contributions of forward-looking individuals from all sides to improve global economic governance.

He said China is willing to work with all parties to further improve the expo, and to fully leverage its four major platforms: international procurement, investment promotion, people-to-people exchanges, and opening up and cooperation. This will better benefit people around the world, Ding said.
